Job Description:

Job Description

Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey () is New Jersey's only National Cancer Institute (NCI) - designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. Our vision is to be a statewide, national and world leader of scientific discovery, transdisciplinary engagement, translation, patient care and education that improves outcomes for cancer patients and populations. this post-doctoral appointee will contribute to achieving this vision, by participating in research within the Division of Pediatric hematology and Oncology.

The primary purpose of the Postdoctoral Appointee position is to conduct research identifying biomarkers associated with chemotherapy-induced changes in neurocognitive functioning, during treatment for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia, under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, Peter Cole, MD (). Briefly, our NCI funded laboratory has previously studied predictors of treatment-related toxicity during therapy for childhood cancer, including dietary factors, genetic variations, and biomarkers within blood or cerebrospinal fluid. Now, in collaboration with the Dana Farber Cancer Institute Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Consortium, we will prospectively receive blood, genomic DNA, and cerebrospinal fluid from over 400 children treated on a single protocol for childhood leukemia. We will relate biomarkers of oxidative stress or neurodegeneration, as well as genetic variants, to evidence of changing neurocognitive functioning during and after curative treatment. The postdoctoral appointee will assume responsibility for choosing and analyzing biomarkers, conductind and supervising analyses, and drafting written reports for inclusion in manuscripts and grant proposals.

The laboratory PI, Peter Cole, will provide the postdoctoral fellow with instruction in techniques specific to our laboratory, as well as ongoing mentoring for the fellow's career development and advancement. However, the postdoctoral fellow will generally be expected to function autonomously, assuming primary responsibility for the development of his or her research and career.
