Our Company, athenahealth, is growing at a meteoric rate, and we're aggressively hiring at all levels. Our goal is to bring order to the chaos of U.S. healthcare, in which hundreds of thousands of medical practices navigate a Byzantine set of clinical and business processes wrought by decades of managed care. We do this by offering a software-as-service solution that embeds insurance rules and clinical processes directly into our practice management & electronic medical platform. In essence, we are building an operating system for the medical office that abstracts away administrative complexity, leaving doctors free to practice medicine. While the terms medical billing, insurance rules, clinical processes and interesting and fun are rarely used in the same sentence, we think they should be.
athenahealth is seeking an individual to support, expand and provide innovation to our Windows enterprise environment. Mission critical operations at athenahealth, including the processing of over 40 million health claims, three million checks, and over one hundred million faxes annually, depend on the systems that this role would support. Strong troubleshooting skills, both network and server, are a critical requirement for this role. While we're looking for an individual that can handle emergencies, the ideal candidate will have a strong dedication to process, standardization, documentation, and minimizing the risk of emergency situations. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage and support 800 plus Windows Servers that support MS SQL databases, IIS web services, file services, and other mission critical applications.
  • This position includes a rotating on-call 24 x 7 schedule responding to critical events and situations outside normal work hours.
  • Provide in-depth problem analysis and resolution.
  • Provide a forward looking approach to meeting challenges. Athenahealth is committed to continually moving forward instead of running in place. Bring insight into new technologies to solve business issues.
  • Search out and implement new technologies to continually simplify the environment while improving security and performance.
  • Maintain and update operating system versions and toolsets to improve security and stability.
  • Support athenahealth's customer facing production systems.
  • Document all system components so that all team members may learn from your work.
  • Develop, manage and execute controls in support of athenahealth's SAS70, Sarbanes Oxley compliance, and best business practices. Allow controls to improve the predictability of the environment without limiting your innovation or enterprise.
  • Find and develop solutions to reduce manual work by focusing on automation.
  • Provide technical guidance to Level I and Level II systems administrators


  • 7-10 years of technical skills around the Windows operating system and server virtualization using VMware. Networking skills are a plus.
  • Experience with major cloud providers (AWS and Azure) is a plus.
  • Experience managing large fleets of Windows Servers with configuration management tools like Puppet, Chef, or Ansible is a plus.
  • Experience with Agile concepts (Scrum and Kanban) is a plus.
  • Experience managing MS SQL Servers.
  • Experience managing RightFax in an Enterprise environment is a plus.
  • Experience managing centralized storage infrastructures (Kaminario and Pure is a plus).
  • Experience managing VMware ESXi clusters and VMware Horizon VDI environments is a plus.
  • PowerShell Scripting experience is a must.
  • Experience managing large server farms, particularly with respect to updating and maintaining operating system levels and reducing administration efforts.
  • Ability to make critical infrastructure decisions in the absence of a manager
  • Team oriented approach to meeting business goals. This includes commitment to individual professional development within the team.
  • Superior communication skills to various levels within the business as well as cross functionally.
  • A history of success managing large, complex technology projects.
  • Experience architecting complex IT solutions in a company with locations in multiple geographies.
  • History of working successfully in a wicked fast paced environment.
